Shiraz Rugs

Shiraz is located in the southwest of Persia. It is renowned throughout the country to be ‘The city of poets, gardens, wine and flowers’. The rugs are no less impressive than this wonderful reputation! The most popular places include Persepolis, named after poignant coming-of-age story of a precocious and outspoken young Persian girl, the Bostan that roughly translates to the ‘Orchard’, and the Golestan Saadi that roughly translates to the ‘Rose Garden’ are commonly depicted on the rugs from this region. The colours of Shiraz rugs that frequently run across these Persian rugs are red, gold, yellow, brown, blue, black and dark blue and the patterns that vary dependent on whether the weaver is tribal, nomadic and Ghashghai, which are a famous nomadic tribe. The knot density of Shiraz rugs, a traditional measure for quality of handmade Persian carpets and handmade Persian rugs, range from 30 knots per square inch (KPSI) on the low end to 90 knots per square inch (KPSI) on the high end. For two Persian rugs of the same age, origin, condition and design, the one with the higher number of knots will be the more valuable. Shiraz rugs normally have a pile, determined by the density and the length of the carpet fibres that are used to weave these Persian rugs, of wool on a foundation, the strong threads that make up the base of Persian carpets, of cotton.
