Meshkin Rugs

Meshkin is located in the North West of Persia in the region of Azarbaijan. Meshkin is the main town of Ardebil Province, 850 km to Tehran. Meshkin like Sarab is near the mountain Sabalan, which is the third highest mountain in Persia with a permanent crater lake that has formed at the summit. The mountain has a ski-resort on it, and has beautiful views across the arid plains of Persia. Meshkin Persian rugs normally have a geometric pattern, with the main colours used brown, yellow, red, navy blue, and sometimes even beige. The knot density of Meshkin rugs, a traditional measure for quality of handmade Persian carpets and handmade Persian rugs, ranges from 30 knots per square inch (KPSI) on the low end to 90 knots per square inch (KPSI) on the high end. Meshkin rugs have a pile, determined by the density and the length of the carpet fibres that are used to weave these Persian rugs, of wool on a foundation, the strong threads that make up the base of Persian carpets, of cotton.
