Rugs are like a fine wine and mature with age as well as value, and we define antique rugs as rugs that are more than 60 years old. antique rugs can be distinguished by the difference in pattern and the knots that are used in the weave of the antique rugs. The patterns in antique rugs are generally more intricate and cover the entire antique rug, and nearly all the antique rugs have medallions as central focal points in their designs.

All antique rugs are handmade rugs, you can check the authenticity against their machine made rug counterparts by looking at the underside of the rug and if you cannot see the pattern as clearly as on the top then it is not a handmade rug.  On our website we clearly mark rugs that are handmade and rugs that machine made, and each comes with the Atlantis rugs certificate of authenticity.

Particularly famous for antique rugs are the regions Theran, Mashad, Mishan and Malayer and these are exported globally from these regions. antique rugs, like any antique, will have most likely have been used and some might have repairs.  Atlantis rugs has photographed any repairs separately and these can be seen in the ‘Condition’ area at product level.

Due to their age, antique rugs are more likely to contain red, orange and beige in their colours, as it is only recently that other colours have been introduced. You are more likely to see antique rugs in medium sizes and as rectangular rugs rather than square or runner rugs.  Look below to see some of the best antique rugs we have to offer.
